Road rage is more common than ever before

If you think that it seems like drivers are angrier these days, you are very observant. Road rage is a growing problem that seems to be flying mostly under the radar. Despite how dangerous and even deadly road rage can be, few people seem to be willing to address the issue.

This is not an isolated problem, either. You can find angry drivers all across California and the rest of the United States, putting virtually everyone on the road at risk. Here is just how dangerous road rage can be.

Drivers brandishing guns, driving too closely

A nonprofit organization called the Trace tracks the use of gun violence in America. According to the organization, drivers are increasingly either pulling out guns as threats or actually firing them at other vehicles. In 2014, there were only 247 reports of gun use during road rage incidents. In 2016, that figure rose to 620. There were 325 incidents in the first half of 2017 alone.

Tailgating is also a significant problem. In a poll taken by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 104 million drivers -- 51% of the respondents -- said they purposely tailgate other drivers. In total, approximately 80% reported feeling anger, road rage or serious aggression approximately once a year.

Why is everyone so angry?

The evidence suggests that Americans in general are more stressed, angry and on edge than they were in the past. This is largely due to the significant change in lifestyle, in which many people struggle with pressures from both work and family. You may deal with this problem too, even though you know that you only have a set number of hours in a day to devote your attention to balancing everything.

Around a third of Americans are not getting enough sleep. The combination of daily, ongoing stress and not enough sleep is often disastrous behind the wheel. Drowsiness itself lowers driving performance, and many people feel grumpy and agitated when they miss even just an hour or two of sleep.

Can you prevent road rage?

You understand how important it is to be safe on the road, so you take proactive steps when you are behind the wheel. Unfortunately, you can do nothing to make other drivers take things as seriously as you do. When you are driving, tired, angry drivers could surround you virtually all of the time.

If you suffered injuries in a road rage accident, you may already know that you need help. Medical bills can quickly pile up, especially if you need ongoing care and treatment. If you also had to take time off work to recover, the money to cover those bills just might not be there. Successfully pursued personal injury claims can be effective at recovering compensation for damages, including medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
