California car accidents: 12-year-old girl suffers head injuries

Many California residents would find it difficult, if not impossible, to understand why a person involved in a collision would flee the crash scene. However, unfortunately, car accidents are followed by such behavior all too often. One recent example resulted in a child suffering head injuries, four other people injured and a man facing serious felony charges.

The crash occurred on a recent Saturday afternoon in Modesto when a 40-year-old man, apparently traveling at a high speed, ran a stop sign in his pickup truck and collided with a sedan. He left the scene before authorities arrived, but a witness' description helped police locate the man in an area near the site. A 12-year-old girl traveling in the sedan was ejected from her seat. She was transported to a local hospital, but was later airlifted to a trauma center to treat her head injuries. Another child and two women, other occupants of the sedan, were taken by ambulance to local hospitals, although their condition is unknown.

The driver of the pickup truck was also taken to a hospital with injuries. He was treated and released and was then booked on felony charges. According to police, when they found him near the crash scene, he showed signs of intoxication. Although the investigation is ongoing, authorities have also indicated that speed is believed to be a factor.

This man now faces charges of DUI causing injury, hit-and-run causing injury and resisting arrest. In addition, a child has suffered head injuries that may result in serious lasting effects. Victims of car accidents like this one, along with their families, often encounter many unexpected medical expenses. In accordance with California civil law, people who find themselves in this type of tragic situation have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit that, if successfully litigated, may provide some financial relief at a stressful time.
