Recent example of the fatality of wrong-way car accidents

A recent fatal accident in California just three days after Christmas once more illustrates the danger of a driver under the influence of any narcotic or intoxicating substance. Car accidents during the festive season are not uncommon and unfortunately often involve drugs and or alcohol. One cannot help feeling for the devastated families of the unfortunate victims.

The fatal accident happened at 3:30 a.m. on the northbound section of a South California freeway. Initial reports point to a driver in a black sedan driving the wrong way on the freeway. The driver crashed head-on into a red sedan, which was subsequently struck a second time by a white sedan.

The two people who died were both occupants of the black sedan. Three other people were seriously injured; one's condition was listed as critical. Some of the victims had to be freed with the jaws of life by the responding fire fighters.

It is estimated that the driver of the black sedan drove for at least four miles in the wrong direction on the freeway before colliding with the red sedan. Highway authorities have indicated that it appears that the driver of the black sedan may have been driving under the influence of a substance. It is not clear if the alleged intoxicated driver is one of the deceased persons.

While the seriously injured victims are entitled to file personal injury claims against the reckless driver, or his or her estate, the legal estate of the deceased victim, or victims, may choose to file wrongful death claims according to California law. Anyone in a similar position as the victims of this horrific accident may benefit from consulting with a personal injury lawyer to obtain advice on the best course of action. A successfully litigated case may result in an award of damages suffered.
