Workplace attacks is a reality in the workplace

Some jobs are more dangerous than others. For example, mining and construction are seen as more dangerous than administrative and office jobs. However, few California employees may realize that attacks in the workplace are the third highest cause of death for certain categories of workers.

Statistics indicate that 2 million United States workers report annually that they have been victims of violence at their workplace. Reported fatal workplace-related attacks in 2014 totaled 409 people, which constitutes approximately 16 percent of the total workplace fatalities of that year. The fact is workplace violence can happen in any occupation. In fact, it is 20 times more likely for taxi drivers to be killed on the job than any other job, while healthcare workers and employees in education, media and the law are also at greater risk.

Violent attacks in the workplace can be divided in to four groups – personal relationships, criminal intent, worker-on-worker violence and customer/client violence. Figures also show that women are at greater risk of violent incidences. Of all the possible violent situations that may happen in the workplace, an active shooter is the most dangerous of all.

Employers should take cognizance of the fact that workplace violence is a reality and that there is a need for the issue to be addressed. Every place of work should have a safety policy addressing violence, which should consider matters such as implementing an emergency action plan and training, adhering to a zero-tolerance policy towards violence in the workplace, and involving law enforcement in mock exercises. Prevention is better than cure.

California employees who have been the victims of workplace attacks are entitled to file a claim for workers' compensation. An attorney is in the ideal position to evaluate an individual case and provide guidance on the best way forward. Workers and their families who suffered injuries due to a violent attack may find that claiming workers' compensation benefits can bring much-needed relief under difficult circumstances
