Motorcycle accidents: Little protection leads to injuries

While riding a motorcycle may bring about some benefits such as being a fuel-efficient, it also holds certain dangers. As a two-wheeled vehicle, a motorcycle needs more coordination and skill than driving a car. In California and elsewhere, motorcycle accidents often lead to serious injuries because there is little protection available to bikers and passengers.

There are certain injuries that are common in bike accidents. Head injuries, bone fractures and road rashes are some of the most frequent ones. Bone fractures often occur when the bike falls over onto the rider's legs. Bikers also often break their wrists and or their arms because they stick their arms out to break the fall.

Road rash typically occurs when the biker makes direct contact with the road surface in an accident. Lack or protective gear may make a biker particularly vulnerable to road rash. Like burns, these kinds of injuries, are evaluated in degrees of seriousness, ranging from first to third degree injuries.

The most serious and dangerous injury for bikers is a head injury, especially when a traumatic brain injury. Head injuries are responsible for the majority of fatalities among bikers. Many avid bikers ignore helmet laws, which is a mistake. There are quite a few studies documenting the benefits of wearing a helmet.

It is important for bikers to take cognizance of the important role played by protective gear. At the same time, they should always constantly pay attention to their surroundings and, for their own protection, the actions of the drivers of other vehicles. Unfortunately, bikers cannot always think for other drivers and are often hurt in motorcycle accidents due to the negligence of another driver. California law allows for a seriously injured victim of an accident to file a personal injury lawsuit against the party or parties believed responsible. A successfully litigated claim may result in an award of financial damages to compensate the victim for the injuries suffered.
