Appropriate safety equipment can prevent most on-the-job injuries

Workers in all sectors in California have to deal with some occupational hazards. Although the various industries might have inherent dangers, some general risks are present in most work environments. Safety authorities say many on\-the\-job injuries occur due to the lack of safety equipment. Employees may not realize that they can insist on being provided with the necessary protection to keep them safe.

Some of the required protective measures that all employers must take include signs to warn workers of risks such as wet floors, electrical hazards and other dangerous areas. Non-slip rugs can go a long way to stop falls, and safety barriers can prevent contact with working machine parts. Business owners must also provide fire extinguishers rated to work in their type of facility, and they must be easily accessible and not hidden behind clutter.

Employees must be provided with personal protective equipment that could include safety glasses to protect their eyes and back braces to provide support for lifting heavy objects. Also, hard hats are essential for any workers in environments where protection is necessary against falling objects or where struck-by hazards exist. Industry-specific PPE must be provided when necessary, such as fall protection for construction workers, line workers, TV tower maintenance workers and others who work at heights.

While some on-the-job injuries are not serious, others could be life-threatening. Those could affect a victim's mental health and have a devastating impact on his or her financial stability and physical capabilities. Fortunately, the California workers' compensation insurance system provides financial support when valid benefits claims are filed. Some injured workers choose to seek the assistance of an experienced attorney to improve their chances of receiving maximum benefits.
