Motorcycle injuries range from road rash to brain injuries

While it may appear easy to ride a motorcycle, the truth of the matter is that it requires a lot more coordination and skill than most people would think. Riding a motorcycle also requires the driver to show constant awareness of the surroundings as well as driving defensively. California bikers who forget these important safety guidelines may find themselves suffering injuries more serious than road rash.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the majority of all bikers involved in bike accidents suffer injuries, if the accident is not fatal. In some cases, more serious injuries are suffered than in others. The most common bike injuries leading to being hospitalized are broken legs, but other fractures are not uncommon. Broken legs are mostly the result of the bike falling on the rider's leg.

Another common injury is road rash, which often happens when the biker does not wear the required protective clothing. As in the case of burn victims, road rash victims may suffer first-degree to third-degree injuries, which escalate in seriousness and urgency of the required treatment. Victims of third-degree road rash will require immediate medical help, as this means all skin layers are gone and the fat and tissue beneath the skin have been exposed.

The most traumatic injuries a biker can suffer are serious brain injuries, as these often lead to disability if not a fatality. Protective gear such as helmets protect bikers against serious head injuries, but they are not legally required in all states. However, statistically, the protective benefits of helmets against brain injuries have been confirmed.

On the roads, bikers often have to be on the lookout for what drivers of cars and trucks are doing. Too often, California bikers fall victim to accidents caused through the negligence of other road users. Often, they will consider themselves lucky if they only suffer first-degree road rash. Fortunately, bikers seriously injured in accidents caused by negligent road users may choose to file a personal injury claim against an alleged negligent driver.  Successfully litigated claims may result in an award of financial damages.
