Distracted driving leads to auto accidents

Road accident statistics in the United States are shocking. It is reported that an average of 37,000 road users die in auto accidents annually, while 2.35 million people are disabled or injured. Many Californians may be shocked to realize that despite the different campaigns, roads seem to become less safe year after year.  Between 2014 and 2015 there was an increase of 6 percent in auto accidents, while 40,000 people lost their lives on U.S. roads in 2017.

One of the main reasons for so many accidents is that many people believe they can multitask while driving. Drivers often eat and drink, use their phones to call or text and in some cases even use their laptops while driving. These distractions are dangerous as one's mind is not on the driving task at hand.

The human mind takes time to shift focus from one thing to another. Findings in a recent study has proven that a driver stays distracted for nearly half a minute after sending a voice message. It is a fact that all the interactive technology used by many people often distract, and the results may be fatal when it happens while driving.

Awareness of the impact of distracted driving is the focus of Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April. The campaign, with the slogan "Just Drive" is aimed at keeping drivers' minds on the road and increasing road safety. If the current trends continue, it is predicted that by 2030 auto accidents will be among the highest five causes of death.

Many California families who have lost a loved one due to distracted driving know all too well the impact such auto accidents have. Fortunately, the option exists to file a wrongful death claim against an alleged negligent or reckless driver, and the assistance of a personal injury lawyer may play a major role in securing an award of financial damages. This could help ease a family's financial suffering during a time when they are already emotionally hurting.
