DUI car accidents: Four members of Californian family killed

Campaigns warning against driving under the influence can be found just about everywhere; still, people do not seem to heed these. A recent accident in Californian is one more example of the devastation DUI car accidents cause. The accident happened on a Sunday night at the end of March.

Reports of a serious accident were received at around 8:40 p.m. Based on the preliminary investigation, it seems that a southbound vehicle, driven by a 47-year-old female, crossed over into the northbound lane. The female driver crashed head-on into a northbound vehicle with five occupants.

Four of the five occupants of the northbound vehicle, aged 40, 19, 14 and 11, died at the accident scene. The only surviving occupant of the car, a 17-year-old, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a medical center in the area. The driver of the southbound vehicle also died at the accident scene.

The accident is still being investigated. Authorities have indicated that alcohol may have played a role in the accident. Friends and family have expressed their concerns about the dangers of driving under the influence.

The injured victim and the surviving families of those who died have the choice to pursue a civil claim against the alleged DUI driver. Since the apparently at-fault driver also died in this particular accident, claims can be made against her estate. Californian law allows for seriously injured victims, or the families of deceased victims of car accidents, to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim against negligent or reckless drivers or their estates. Upon proof that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, a court may award financial damages to the seriously injured and the family of the deceased victims.
