CHP issued 14,000 distracted driving citations per month in 2012

Distracted driving has become a major safety concern in the modern age largely due to the advancements made in mobile technology. Distracted driving includes texting or talking on a cellphone, but these certainly aren't the only items on the list of qualifying behaviors.

The definition also includes putting makeup on or eating a quick lunch. "Driving is a complex task, requiring a motorist's full attention," said California Highway Patrol Commissioner Joe Farrow. "Anything that diverts the driver's attention from the roadway, even for one or two seconds, could result in tragedy."

The CHP has already made reducing this behavior on California roads a priority, and the agency has asked that drivers do the same. In the year 2012 alone, the CHP wrote over 168,000 citations for drivers that were caught texting or talking on a cellphone in violation of California traffic laws. That averages out to approximately 14,000 tickets per month.

These numbers not only show that the CHP is focusing on distracted driving, but it also indicates that the problem is widespread. When these behaviors contribute to an accident, they could become the basis of a personal injury lawsuit filed by the victims. A personal injury lawsuit isn’t about changing the past, it is about moving forward.

For some victims, it is about making the negligent party take responsibility for their actions. For others, it is about the compensation that will help cover tangible costs such as large medical bills or lost wages. For others, it is about compensation that acknowledges the pain and suffering that they experienced.

Of course, a lawsuit could be filed for a combination of all of the reasons mentioned above. Whatever the motivation may be, consulting with a personal injury attorney is the first step to finding their relief.
