3,000 Californians die in car accidents annually

Cars have changed significantly over the last 100 years. They have definitely become a lot faster and more dangerous. Fortunately, an awareness of the greater safety hazards cars hold has led to improvements made to cars by the automotive industry. Even though there is an increased awareness of road safety, thousands of people die in car accidents on roads in the United States every year.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety estimates that approximately 3,000 Californians die in auto accidents annually. Driver error is the biggest cause of these fatal accidents. However, there are other common reasons for accidents, which drivers' can avoid by taking certain practical steps.

The first such cause is bad weather. Different forms of weather poses different hazards, but no matter what bad weather conditions a person drives in, caution is important.  While one cannot control weather conditions, it is possible to take steps to ensure safety on the road. The other common causes of auto accidents all relate to irresponsible driving.

Reckless drivers who pay no attention to road rules not only pose a danger to others in or near the road, but also to themselves and their passengers. Another dangerous habit is speeding. Speeding increases the chances of an accident, while it decreases a driver's chances to react in case of a possible accident. Lastly, distracted driving and drunk driving also belong at the top of the list of reasons why so many accidents happen. It is estimated that, in 2013, one person was killed every 52 minutes in a drunk driving accident on U.S. roads, while 421,000 people suffered injuries in accidents related to distracted driving in 2012.

It seems as if driving a car can be considered a real safety hazard as one never knows when another driver may do something reckless. Fortunately, victims of California car accidents, or their families when there's been a fatality, have the choice to seek legal recourse. Victims seriously injured in car accidents, or the legal estates of deceased victims, may elect to file civil claims for monetary damages resulting from a car accident. Once it is proven that the accident resulted from the negligence of another, a court may award financial damages to the aggrieved party.
