Man killed in possible power plant equipment malfunction

A 47-year-old man was killed when a high-pressure valve exploded at Riverside County power plant. It is possible that an equipment malfunction caused the death of the man at the Palm Springs, California, location. The plant will remain open as an investigation is underway into the accident that claimed the life of the Sentinel Energy Project worker.

The project is operated by the Diamond Generating Corporation, based out of Los Angeles, California. Just after 10 in the morning, the fire department received a call describing a medical emergency taking place at the facility, located at Power Line Road and Melissa Lane. The man was pronounced dead at 11:27 am that same day.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department has taken over the investigation. This is typical for an industrial accident, and the department claims that their involvement in no way suggests foul play. The 800-megawatt facility has been open since 2013 and only runs on occasion. It is designed to switch on and off very quickly so that it can meet high electrical demands or supplement solar and wind power with natural gas.

A spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, or Cal-OSHA, did not have specific information about what caused the on-the-job injuries and death. He stated that the investigation could be ongoing for several months and that, for now, the plant will remain open. The spokesman added that everything is still operating and that, despite the accident happening, they could continue working there. He added that Cal-OSHA could close the plant, but they have not so far.

In cases like this one where there are on-the-job injuries, possible equipment malfunction, or even death, the victims and their families deserve answers and restitution. Medical bills, funeral costs and the loss of wages can all be overwhelming when a sudden, unexpected death or serious injury occurs. In California, an experienced personal injury lawyer can help the loved ones and family members of these victims get the benefits to which they are entitled.
