Safety experts call for louder EVs

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, electric vehicles are responsible for around 2,400 pedestrian and cyclist injuries every year. Electric vehicles (EVs) are very quiet, which is a great selling point, but an issue for safety. People rely on all of their senses to navigate the world safely. EVs, while good for the environment, are often too quiet for people to hear and react to them. This post will go over the new safety standards and what they may mean for you.

The new rule, promulgated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration applies to all electric and light duty vehicles that weigh less than 10,000 pounds. It requires the vehicles to emit an audible noise while going forward and in reverse at 18.6 mph or slower. The safety experts believe that the noise from the wheels and wind are speeds above 18.6 mph are sufficiently loud to alert pedestrians.

By September 1, 2018, at least half of all newly manufactured elective and hybrid vehicles must be equipped with these new noise technologies. By 2019, entire fleets must be equipped with the technology.

If you were struck by a driver in a quiet EV, then you may want to speak to an attorney. Yes, the new rules are not yet implemented, however drivers are still under an obligation to ensure that they do not hit pedestrians. A lawyer can help you with the accident investigation and get the compensation you need to pay for your medical bills. You don't need to go through this alone.
