Mother of hit-and-run victim pushes to pass new bill

A mother in Rancho Santa Margarita was forced to deal with the horror of finding out her son was the victim of a pedestrian accident involving a vehicle that fled the scene. Fortunately, unlike many hit-and-run accidents that result in fatal injuries to victims, her son was not killed. However, he was thrown off his skateboard and into a median, resulting in the loss of one of his toes.

Because of the accident, this mother has been crusading to bring awareness to hit-and-runs and accountability to their perpetrators. Thanks to her efforts, as of Jan. 1, it has become a law that if a hit-and-run causes major injuries or any fatalities, electronically operating freeway signs will provide law enforcement with license plate numbers and other information.

Her efforts to make this bill a law were vetoed in 2014, so the fact that this has now become law is a huge triumph for the Orange County mother and all future victims and families of hit-and-run accidents.

While this new law may significantly help law enforcement in tracking down suspects of such crimes, a California personal injury attorney will know what must be done to hold the criminal financially accountable for the victim's injury or death. Accidents such as this accumulate costs for victims, including medical bills, lost wages, rehabilitation, counseling and sometimes, tragically, funeral expenses. If you or a loved one was hurt or injured by a vehicle that fled the scene, you may benefit from a personal injury attorney who knows how to pursue the compensation you deserve.
