Woman charged with manslaughter after fatal car accident

A recent incident in Torrance dampened the holiday spirit and brought to light just how much damage auto accidents can cause. A California woman drove her car into a crowd leaving a Christmas program at a local church, killing four people, among them a six-year-old boy.

The deceased boy's entire family bore the heaviest brunt from the car accident. Among those killed was his mother; his father and two of his sisters were among the injured. Those injured in total were five children and eight adults, with wounds ranging from head trauma to broken bones and abrasions.

Police at the scene suspect that the driver was under the influence of prescription medication when the car accident occurred. According to reports, the driver allegedly sped past a red light, then drove into the crowd before hitting another vehicle head on.

Investigations into the car accident are still ongoing. Police were still waiting for the toxicology report when they brought the driver to court. She answered charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of a drug causing injury, pleading not guilty to all charges leveled against her.

Friends of the driver claim she has suffered from long-term disability. According to them, she had to use a walker or wheelchair sometimes. Her vehicle was also equipped with handheld brakes.

She had no prior convictions for driving under the influence according to officials. Investigations into the car accident and the toxicology report will shed more light on what exactly transpired, including whether negligence on the part of the driver may have played a role in causing the tragedy.
