Are there safety precautions in place for motorcyclists?

Fatal motorcycle crashes may leave us questioning whether motorcyclists are to blame. These traumatic events often lead to catastrophic injuries like broken bones or a spinal cord injury, neck injury, head injury or brain injury that may cause permanent disability. It may be possible to prevent a motorcycle collision by ensuring safety precautions are followed.

According to California laws, motorcyclists and vehicle drivers are equally responsible to keep roads safe, particularly highways where speeds are naturally higher. In the majority of motorcycle accidents involving motorcycles, the main causes were unsafe speeds, improper turns, and driving under the influence. In more than half of cases, motorcyclists were considered to be at fault.

The California Highway Patrol encourages motorcyclists to participate in the state's official safety and training program, which includes classes and an on-cycle course that is mandatory for motorcyclists under 21-years-old.

Also noteworthy from a safety perspective is a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that indicates motorcyclists are likely to suffer fatalities roughly 28 times more than other drivers.

For motorcyclists, taking advantage of certain safety programs, wearing protective gear, and understanding the hazards that are unique to this particular form of transportation can be tremendously helpful in reducing the risk of accidents, as well as their related serious injuries. But no matter how careful you are, mishaps on the road can still happen at any time.

If you are the victim of a motorcycle accident it is important to seek counsel from a trusted and experienced legal team.
