Street racing causes fatal car accident

The prospect of street racing has a glamorous appeal to many young drivers. The popularity of movies like "Fast and Furious" and its sequels, which depict heroes and villains resolving conflicts by racing expensive and luxurious cars is iconic of this dangerous subculture.

Many Californians may mistakenly believe that these races are being held in the dead of night on some distant and deserted stretch of dirt road, away from the general public. They use this false belief to reassure themselves that they are safe from this illegal and dangerous activity.

But a recent street racing incident in Tulare County has highlighted how street racing can be lethal to the participants and to innocent drivers. The California Highway Patrol is investigating a street racing incident that claimed the life of a teenager.

The police believe that one of the racers tried to overtake his opponent and in the process crashed into an oncoming motorist. The other suspected participants took him to a hospital, where he died. But they did not remain at the hospital, and police are seeking to locate their whereabouts.

Car accidents can often have terrible consequences, but when the accident is the result of street racing, the speeds at which the racers are driving drastically increases the likelihood that the accident will cause serious damage and injury.

The illegality of street racing has not deterred young men and women from participating in it and thereby putting innocent Californians at risk. The laws that protect our roads and highways may deal with people who choose to partake in such perilous activity on a criminal level, but it is also important for innocent motorists who are victimized by such reckless driving to secure compensation for any injuries and damage that they sustain as a result.
