Bridge construction site accident kills 2 California workers

Last September a small rural California town held a ground breaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of a new bridge project, the purpose of which would be to safely connect two counties. The town officials had no way of knowing, however, that the construction site for their new bridge would eventually become the site of a tragedy.

Sadly, however, that is exactly what happened when two workers fell to their deaths in a construction site accident.

While building the foundation for the bridge, the two men, who were in a bucket suspended 80 feet in the air by a crane, fell and landed on wooden beams spanning a hole in the ground. Both men died at the scene.

It is unclear why or exactly how the two men fell. In a statement, the owner of the construction company said that he did not believe that the accident was due to an equipment malfunction. An OSHA investigation into the accident is ongoing.

On-the-job injuries can range from relatively minor problems to tragedies such as those suffered in this instance. Those who have been injured in a workplace accident may be entitled to receive workers’ compensation, and in some instances death benefits may be available to surviving relatives of workers who die in such accidents.

However, there is a very specific process that must be followed to make a claim and obtain such compensation. That it is why it is a good idea in these cases to seek the help of an attorney.
