14-year-old victim of 2 hit-and-runs within seconds in Santa Ana

On Monday morning an accident altered the course of a young girl's life. Academics brought the 14-year-old to the Santa Ana College campus that day. She was going to the campus to grab an application for a scholarship and attend a junior high honors class.

To get to the campus, the girl had to cross at least one intersection. The Orange County Register reported that the Santa Ana police had released a video that captured the car accident that occurred just after she stepped into the intersection. The video was helpful because the drivers involved in the incident didn't stay to testify.

The video showed two vehicles involved in the collision that left the girl with a leg injury. One of the drivers stopped his truck, looked back, and then sped off. The driver of the second car stopped for just a bit longer, but only because she had run over to the victim and took her backpack. She then got into her car and left the scene.

The video showed that the young girl stepped into the intersection after the light had already changed to red. Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna reported that leaving the scene turned this from an accident into a criminal matter for the drivers.

That’s criminal, but what about on the civil side? Personal injury cases are not always cut-and-dry. There are a lot of factors in play leading up to the collision, and these factors can alter the result of a trial depending on, yes, other factors such as the specific law in the jurisdiction.

Could this girl’s actions affect the compensation she may be awarded by a jury? What about the fact that these drivers made the incredibly reckless decision to keep going? What about the fact that they didn’t render aid to the injured girl?

An attorney not only understands the administrative process involved in filing a complaint in Orange County, but a personal injury attorney will also work hard to make sure that a victim can receive the maximum compensation that they deserve after an accident of this kind.
